Consumers mislead about ATOL protection for airlines

Consumer protection organisation Which? has accused airlines of misleading customers about the ATOL protection airlines provide under the ATOL scheme.

In research done by ‘Which?’, airlines were found to have told customers that they would be covered by ATOL protection if they bought just a flight but the ATOL scheme actually only covers customers if they buy a ‘package’ holiday including a flight; or a flight with accommodation (known as a ‘flight plus’). That entitles the buyer to receive alternative flights, repatriation or to get their money back should the airline fail.

Many airlines’ holiday brands, like Jet2 Holidays, do offer full ATOL protection for their holiday sales but this may not always extend to sales of flights alone.
